Buchu Leaves – 100g
Buchu leaves for distilling
A little Buchu leaves history, the leaves of the Agathosma (Barosma) betulina plant native to South Africa. Widely used for the production of medicinal essential oil extracts. All in all the aromatic, slightly pungent leaves harvested and carefully dried at low temperatures (not exceeding 40°C) to preserve their volatile compounds. The dried leaves are then put in a large still and heated in the presence of steam. The steam causes volatile oils to evaporate out of the leaves, which then condense in a separate chamber. The resulting concentrated oil is a valuable source of natural compounds with powerful health properties.
Using Buchu leaves for distilling purposes.
1. Start by harvesting fresh buchu leaves. Place them in a burlap bag or other mesh bag and hang them upside down in a dark, dry place to allow them to dry out before using them for distilling.
2. Once the leaves are completely dry, weigh out the amount you need for distilling.
3. Place the dried leaves in a pot with a tight-fitting lid.
4. Add enough water to cover the leaves and bring the water to a boil.
5. Allow the contents to simmer for 1-2 hours.
6. Once the leaves have been cooked, strain out the mixture and discard the leaves.
7. Transfer the cooled liquid to a still and distill it according to your still’s instructions.
8. Collect the buchu spirit and store it for later use.
