Wormwood – 100g
To summarize Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) a perennial herb native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Notably it has a strong, bitter taste and a characteristic sage-like aroma. As well as used for centuries for its medicinal benefits. Wormwood is an ingredient in the alcoholic beverages vermouth and absinthe. Subsequently homemade absinthe consist of the holy trinity of wormwood, anise, and fennel, along with a hard liquor like vodka. The ingredient will give you more flavor and a more heady punch, because the wormwood separates a hallucinogenic from a non-hallucinogenic absinthe.
Important steps for using wormwood in distilling:
Ingredients and Equipment:
1. Firstly, Wormwood: Use dried wormwood leaves and flowers.
2. Secondly, Other botanicals: Common ingredients include green anise, fennel, and other herbs.
3. Thirdly, Alcohol base: Typically high-proof neutral grain spirits.
4. Also, Distillation equipment: Pot still or similar apparatus.
Process:
1. Importantly Preparation of Botanicals:
– Make sure to measure the required amount of wormwood along with other botanicals.
– Commonly, about 100 grams of wormwood must used per liter of alcohol base, but this can vary.
2. Maceration:
– Combine the dried botanicals with the alcohol in a large jar or container.
– Seal the container and let it steep (macerate) for a specified period, usually 24 to 48 hours, to extract the flavors and compounds.
3. Distillation:
– Transfer the macerated mixture to the still.
– Slowly heat the still to allow the alcohol vapor to carry the essential oils and flavors from the botanicals.
– Collect the distillate, which should be clear and concentrated with the flavors of wormwood and other herbs.
4. Dilution and Coloring:
– Dilute the distillate to the desired strength. Traditional absinthe is between 45-74% ABV.
– Optionally, a secondary maceration with additional herbs can be done to color the absinthe green and enhance flavors.
